Farewell to the Bundesliga! USMNT Midfielder Reyna Heads to Ligue 1, Signs Five-Year Deal with Strasbourg
Gio Reyna has officially ended his career in Germany, joining Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. The US international has signed a five-year contract with the club, opening a new chapter in his professional journey.
During his seven years in German football, Reyna played for two Bundesliga clubs: Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. He made 147 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund, contributing 19 goals and 18 assists. In the 2024-25 season, he was loaned to Premier League side Nottingham Forest but failed to make a significant impact.
After joining Mönchengladbach in 2025, Reyna's form dipped, managing just one goal and one assist in 20 appearances. Injuries have consistently plagued him, hindering his ability to perform consistently.
As a member of the US national team, Reyna has earned 43 caps and scored 10 goals. In a summer World Cup warm-up match, the US defeated Paraguay 4-1, with Reyna scoring a stunning long-range strike.
Mönchengladbach sporting director Ruwen Schrodt commented: "Gio is immensely talented, but unfortunately, during his year with us, frequent injuries prevented him from fully realizing his potential and consistently proving his worth on the pitch. We wish him all the best and great success in his new challenge in Ligue 1."
